CALL FOR PAPERS

Diasporas and mobilities: current critical perspectives.
Africa, America-Caribbean, Europe, Asia (15th- 21st centuries)

The very dynamic research on the concept of diaspora in recent decades is indicative of a paradigm shift in various disciplines of the humanities and social sciences, including history, literary criticism, cultural studies, anthropology, sociology and political sciences. These henceforth tend to use it to revisit and interrogate the notions of nation, State, citizenship, membership, culture and language that have traditionally dominated debates on human mobilities, exchanges, networks and contact zones. Hence the emphasis that the organisers of this Colloquium have chosen to place on the conceptual notion of Diasporas, often coupled with mobilities/circulations in their various forms.

Indeed, multiple mobilities and circulations generate profound mutations; they explode structuring matrices, redraw territories and imaginary landscapes and produce new otherness, a source of fears and antagonisms, but also of personal and societal innovations and new political demands.

In this context, the present colloquium explores this dynamic of human mobility on the one hand through the experience of Africans and Afro-descendants and, on the other hand, it aims to cross the themes of borders, circulations, human-environment interactions, memories, competence to act and interculturalities or creolisations not only on the African continent, but also more widely in the Americas-Caribbean, without excluding Europe and Asia.

African Arts will be looked at in a new light, which means that they will be examined from the perspective of the diaspora, as an object in motion, in a process similar to the history of the dispersal and the  “absorption” of African Diasporas. For “the life of art objects from Africa in European and American museums has had a paradoxical impact and correlative history and images about and of Africa, as bodies of diasporas as subjects and sites of representation, have moved from one continent to another and back again” (Peffer and Baudouin, 2013).

We expect multidisciplinary communication proposals that reflect on the concepts, theories, methods and sources of diaspora studies. These proposals should focus on imaginary and political issues in the fields of humanities, literature, art (cinema, painting, music and performing arts), history, sociology, philosophy, etc.

The Colloquium is mainly aimed at Researchers, Teacher-Researchers, PhD students and collectives who place the issue in question at the heart of their debates, questionings and struggles.

The reflection will be structured around six main areas, which are not exhaustive:

  1. Capacity to act/ New imagined identities
  2. Integration / Reception / Rejection
  3. Departure / Return / Arts
  4. Diaspora / Memories
  5. Borders / Circulations / Interactions
  6. Gender / Diasporas
